Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1273), was a poet and a Sufi mystic philosopher, founder of the Sufi confraternity of the Dancing Dervishes. He wrote the Mathnawi ( Spiritual Song), a literary gem in the Persian language said to have been conceived in the vineyards of Konya (in Turkey). Its 26,000 verses of moral and didactic content reveal a wondrous combination of love of humanity and the concept of tolerance. When he died it was said of him: “He is like bread: who can think of going away from him?”
Not more than ten years ago, the Mathnawi met with a certain success in the Western world and - thanks to celebrities like Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn and Madonna – became a bestseller in the United States.
Nowadays, as we walk through our vineyards and brush against the bunches of grapes we cannot but remember one of Jalal ad-Din Rumi's most famous verses: “Grapes want to turn to wine”.
