8 night tour from Porto, taking in the Minho region on our way north to the delights of Rias Baixas and Ribeira Sacra in Galicia via the magnificent Santiago de Compostela and then returning south to the upper Douro. A wonderful slow train ride to Porto takes us to the crackerjack fun of the festival of Sao Joao to add fireworks and rabelo boat races to port where the Douro meets the Atlantic.

After a first night in a boutique hotel in historic Viana de Castelo and a private tour and lunch with Vasca Croft of the renowned Afros vineyards, we head for the border and do a before and after lunch tasting of Portuguese alvarinho and Spanish albariño on opposite banks of the river Miño (and opposite sides of the border).

During a 2 night stay in the historic Hotel San Francisco in Santiago de Compostela, we enjoy a tapas meal in the city and a Sunday morning tasting in the Rias Baixas where we visit 2 of the finest albariño producers in the Val do Salnes zone, culminating in a lazy Sunday lunch near the sea in Cambados. The rest of Sunday and Monday morning is free to visit the cathedral and sights of Santiago, before we head for an afternoon tasting in Bierzo at the highly acclaimed Desciendentes de Jose Palacios vineyard and then loop back to 2 nights at the Parador in Monforte de Lemos.

We enjoy 2 fine tastings at stunning vineyards in Ribeira Sacra, including a private tour from the greatly renowned Ramon Losada and a river cruise through canyons and monasteries of this secret treasure of the Iberian north west.

The next day we head south to Pinhao and a night at the delightful Vintage House hotel overlooking the Douro, enjoying a visit to the magnificent Quinta do Noval anda rabelo trip up river. This prepares us for the final flourish, after a stunning train trip along the Douro, we discover that the festival of Sao Joao is just getting into full flow in Porto. Staying in the glorious riverside Palacio do Freixo pousada, we enjoy a private tasting at Graham’s port lodge, then sardines and fireworks to mark the arrival of the festival.

Day 1 Friday June 17th

Meet at Porto airport for 1000 departure for the Hotel in Viana de Castelo where check in and then set off on tour of a prestige local, followed by lunch at the vineyard with the winemaker. Afternoon visit to Ponte de Lima on our way back to Viana de Castelo, where people are free to have dinner (not included) in the old town where they want

Day 2 Saturday June 18th

Breakfast, then departure for visit to the alvairnho winery near Melgaco by the river Miño , where we arrive around 1100 and enjoy a tour of the vineyard and a tasting of the alvarinho wines followed by a traditional Portuguese lunch. After lunch we cross the border and visit a Spanish bodega, where we also taste their albariño wines, then head north to arrive in Santiago de Compostela at the San Francisco Hotel late afternoon, early evening. After settling into the hotel we have a tapas meal together in the city.

Day 3 Sunday June 19th

Departure for visit to Val do Salnes sub region of the Rias Baixas where we visit two renowned vineyards in the morning, Pazo de Señorans and then Palacio de Fefinañes, before a lunch by the sea in Cambados. Afternoon return to Santiago, where people are free to explore the city and eat (meal not included).

Day 4 Monday June 20th

Breakfast and then the morning is free in Santiago for people to explore the city further, have an early lunch (not included) before a 1400 departure for Vilafranca del Bierzo where we visit one of the top Beirzo vineyards and enjoy a tasting of their Bierzo wines. Travel to the Parador at Monforte de Lemos (Ribeira Sacra) where we arrive around 1900 and then have dinner together at the hotel.

Day 5 Tuesday June 21st

A morning visit to vineryards in Ferreira de Panton, where the winemaker will host a tasting of his wines Then we head towards the river and a visit, tasting and lunch with another local winemaker. After lunch, we travel on a catamaran up river to see the vineyards and monasteries of the area from the water, before return to the parador for dinner.

Day 6 Wednesday June 22nd

Early departure for the upper Douro where we visit one of the flagship quintas where we enjoy a visit, tasting and then lunch at the Quinta, followed by a rabelo boat trip to the CS Vintage House Hotel in Pinhao, where people are free to dine (not included).

Day 7 Thursday June 23rd

Morning train to Porto, to arrive around 1230, with the bus transferring us to the Pestana Porto hotel. People are free to have their own lunch (not included). In the afternoon, we head for one of the Port lodges to enjoy a visit and tasting of a range of ports and Douro wines, after which we enjoy the festival of Sao Joao, taking in a festive and extensive dinner together by the river in prime position to take in the midnight fireworks on the river.

Day 8 Friday June 24th

Breakfast and then an easy day free in Porto to enjoy the festival, especially the rabelo boat races between the port lodges on the river during the day. In the evening we enjoy a relaxed dinner together.

Day 9 Saturday June 25th

Breakfast and formal close of tour. Transfers to Porto to connect with Newark and London flights.
