Following lunch, we will take a gentle stroll through the town of Bevagna, a former Roman colony. We will also stop off on the way to do some wine sampling at a charming local enoteca. Day 2 –Visit to Vineyards & Sagrantino Wine Tasting in Montefalco This morning we will depart for nearby Montefalco for a private tour of selected local wineries and wine tastings of Montefalco’s excellent wines which are considered to be among the best in Italy. Weather permitting we will start the morning with a gentle stroll through the vineyards. Following lunch at a typical local restaurant or at one of the wineries we will also pay a visit to the town of Montefalco itself. Known as “the balcony of Umbria” because of the panoramic views it enjoys, Montefalco is now famous in Italy for its wines but is also home to some important works of art such as the 15th century fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Montefalco Sagrantino is one of only two Umbrian wines to be awarded the prestigious Italian DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita –the highest Italian wine appellation) and the area also produces the excellent Rosso di Montefalco. Day 3 –Visit to Vineyards & Wine Sampling in Orvieto After the red wines of Montefalco, today we will depart for the Orvieto area to sample the Orvieto DOC white wines, famous since antiquity as a favourite wine for popes and Italian princes. Following a visit to local wine cellars with wine tastings and lunch we will visit the city of Orvieto itself and see its stunning gothic cathedral. You will also have some free time to explore the city and visit the many local craft shops and delicatessens for some shopping. Day 4 -Wine Tasting in Torgiano & Guided Walking Tour of Assisi Today we will visit the Wine Museum and the Olive Oil Museum in Torgiano. Both museums are run by the Fondazione Lungarotti set up by the well-known Italian wine-making family who also produce the Torgiano Rosso Riserva, the second of Umbria’s two DOCG wines, as well as a number of other excellent wines. Following the museum visits we will have a tasting of local wines and lunch at the elegant “Le Tre Vaselle” restaurant in Torgiano. In the afternoon we will visit the town of Assisi known throughout the world as the birthplace of Saint Francis. We will take a guided walking tour through the medieval streets lined with craft shops and delicatessens and see the main sights, including the spectacular Basilica of Saint Francis with its frescoes by Giotto. Day 5 -Farewell On the final day we will enjoy a farewell breakfast before checking out of your hotel with some fantastic memories and hopefully a few bottles of wine to take home too...
